COMPACT INKBERRY Ilex glabra 'Compacta' is a North American Eastern Coastal Plain species. 'Compacta' is a denser, shorter form of common inkberry, evergreen and suitable for most garden conditions. This fast-growing shrub will reach its full size in just a few years, and serves as an Eastern US Native alternative to boxwood hedges. This shrub does sucker, so cut new shoots early in the season if you wish to limit horizontal expansion. It is also fairly salt, wet site, deer, and rabbit tolerant. 'Compacta' is a female cultivar and will set small jet black fruit if a male shrub is nearby.
